Desi puppy gets videshi love, home too
Couples in Canada, USA prefer stray Indian dogs over other breeds for adoption
From New Delhi to USA
Rina Pita Peach and her husband with Rupee, the desi dog they have adopted. The American couple adopted Rupee when it was 10-week old.
Niyati Rana Ahmedabad
There has been a new addition to the list of Indian things being exported to foreign countries. Guess what it could be! It is our stray dog.
Thanks to the efforts of an organization, Adopt An Indian Desi Dog (AAIDD), stray dogs or desi dogs are gaining popularity among foreign couples in Canada and the USA. They may be considered a bane in India, but stray dogs are now finding love in foreign shores where couples are coming forward to adopt them.
Some 100 stray dogs, which are usually not being taken care of in India, are now indulging in luxurious life in Metro Vancouver and Metro Seattle. And AAIDD has taken some adoption cases for desi dogs. Of the total puppies, which have found safe den and family across seven seas, three were found in a garbage dump in Mussoorie, one from the streets where it was found eating crap, and one was found with severe rickets.
But now that their destiny has changed, they now get to sleep on soft cushioned bed, play on green lawn with special toys and even accompany their masters during vacations. And at the end of the day, they too earn compliments for their owners.
Ironically, none of the puppies have been given to any Indian family living abroad. For families in Canada, the adoption fee is generally $650 Canadian dollar, which is non-profiting and includes charges for transport (air), vet visits and checks in three countries, shots, parasite control, and crate. For families residing in America, the fee comes to around $450.
Member of the AAIDD, Barbara Gard who has been instrumental in starting the initiative, shared her views with DNA via an email from Canada. She said that a puppy was found to be quicker and faster than Border Collie, obedient and has excellent vision and hearing power.
Gard said she had suggested to find homes for the stray dogs in Canada and around. Though she wanted to start a health programme for the street dogs in Mussoorie and surrounding areas, she soon realised that she could move to India and run such a programme. She calculated that offering dogs a shelter and their upbringing will be a more economical activity in Canada than in India as a dog lives a life of 10-15 years.
"The puppies in North America live a better and quality life. The people who are sponsoring their adoption process get greater rewards in life. By doing so others also learn about how a desi dog makes a wonderful family dog," said Gard. More on p4

They gave desi canines a new home
Here is a profile of the people who adopted street dogs from India
Rina Pita Peach, USA
A stray dog, or desi dog as it is fondly called, might have been adopted by a foreigner but still remains an Indian dog. Peach has named the dog, Rupee. Narrating the story of Rupee's adoption over high breed dogs, she said in an email that she adopted the desi dog when it was 10 weeks old. "Our pure breed Dalmatian died at the age of 16 and thus we wanted to adopt an older dog, maybe a rescued Greyhound. However, when I was searching a website of the rescued dogs, I came across desi dog puppies. I got interested and visited New Delhi. There I saw street dogs," said Peach.
Not only Peach flaunts the desi dog wherever she goes, but Rupee also earns many compliments. "My Rupee is a very intelligent, friendly, happy and playful puppy. It loves to be petted and is a beautiful dog. I get more compliments now than before when I used to have my Dalmatian. People always ask what kind of breed is Rupee? I often tell them about the desi dogs in India and people are always interested to hear about them. When I was searching for another dog, I wanted a beautiful dog. I just wanted a good, intelligent, affectionate and healthy dog…and I got all what I wanted," she added.
Rupee has a great life; he eats a varied of the best quality dog food available. He has many toys and he plays with other dogs as well every day. He sleeps next to Peach's bed. "If he had stayed in Delhi streets, maybe he would not have survived to this day and be healthy and strong," she explained.

Elaine Harder, Vancouver, British Columbia
Elaine and her husband do not have a child of their own and so they consider their pet dog their only child. Remembering some funny experiences with her desi dog, Freeman, as they named it, she said: "When our desi puppy was flown from India to Canada, we went to the airport to pick it up. The dog was wearing a pink sweater. When we changed what the puppy was wearing, we came to know about the gender of the dog and to our surprise it was a male dog. In our application, we had given preference for a female dog, but this male puppy immediately seemed to be ours. Although it was tired and confused and afraid after the long journey, it was so affectionate and loving and caring, that we didn't want to go back to Barabara and exchange it for some female puppy. We then changed its name to Freeman and it has turned out to be the most special little puppy we could have ever asked for."
Ask Elaine about Freeman and she can't stop praising it. Freeman loves to stare and watch the TV set. In fact, it talks to the TV. It has got an excellent vision and hearing. "We are taking it to obedience school for socialisation because it is so intelligent," she sums up.

go natural

Clean Naturally The best way to make yourself, your dog, and your home toxin-free is to use cleaning products with all-natural ingredients.
Baking soda is great when used in either homemade cleaners or just sprinkled on the surface to be cleaned. Cornstarch does a good job as most carpet cleaners. Lemon juice or white vinegar helps remove grease, mildew and hard water stains.
How about fabric softener? Here is a simple way to make your laundry as soft as if you'd used a brand name fabric softener: Add a quarter cup of baking soda to your wash cycle, and a quarter cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. That's it!
If you want fragrance, use essential oils. For example, add a touch of lavender oil to your homemade cleaners or softener. A few drops of lavender in a water spray make a pleasant and mild disinfectant for countertops. Add a few drops of eucalyptus if you want stronger action. Essential oils are also great for room sprays - many essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties, and they smell great as well!
As you can see, we really don't need to use synthetic fragrances and scents, do we?

Recipe - Peanut Butter Nibbles I haven't yet seen a dog who doesn't like peanut butter. Your dog will beg you for more of these nibbles!
Ingredients:
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup unsalted peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Stir together flour and baking powder in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Cream together oil, honey, peanut butter, and vanilla in a large bowl.
  4. Add eggs, one at a time, stirring to incorporate.
  5. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir to form a smooth dough.
  6. Drop dough by the rounded teaspoonful, 1 1/2 inches apart, on 2 ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 12-14 minutes, or until light golden.
  8. Cool completely before serving.

Aromatherapy Recipe - Energizing Room Spray This spray can energize you and your family members (including your dog).
You need the following essential oils:
  • 1 drop lavender
  • 4 drops lemon
  • 3 drops orange
  • 2 drops rosemary
Mix the oils into 3 cups of water. Spray around your house for an energy lift.

IF I HAD MY CHILD TO RAISE OVER AGAIN..
I'd finger paint more, and point the finger less.
I'd do less correcting, and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less, and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd teach less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love!

Every day, thousands of homeless animals enter shelters. Whether they come from puppy mills, abusive homes, or are abandoned, they are in desperate need of love and care. All too often, shelters become overcrowded and struggle to find the resources necessary to feed, shelter, and find loving families for these deserving pets. Unfortunately, nearly half of all animals that enter a shelter never make it out.

Subject: PLEASE SPEAK OUT AGAINST BURNING OF LIVE LEOPARD IN UTTARAKHAND, INDIA!

Dear Friends:  India fails yet another big cat. This poor animal was sequestered in a shed, beaten, caged, then doused with karosene and set afire to burn to death while still alive. The footage is shocking and heartbreaking. Though there are conflicting accounts, wildlife officers were present and did nothing to intervene.

Please express your outrage to the governor of Uttarakhand at

www.governoruk.gov.in/writetogovernor

and demand that she locate the park officials and villagers that conspired to murder the cat and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. We need to put pressure on India to stop this madness!

Thank You. Michelle

dog raped and killed

There is nothing strange about finding a raped dog in Turkey.
It happens everywhere and you only have to spend some time on Facebook to discover many many cases, sometimes on a daily basis.
But this case is a little different. The end result is the same, a dog is raped by a human and is killed afterwards… what is different is the LOCATION of the crime.
The rape took place right behind the building of the Sincan Municipality in Ankara.

A few meters away from a building constantly surveiled by security a dog is being raped, his screams are loud, can be heard from the distance…
But nobody did anything…
Please call the office of the mayor Mustafa Tuna on:

American army families voicing to take their pets to America

Animal Legal Defense Fund Demands Clarification of Pet Evacuation Policies for U.S. Military Families in Japan
Desperate Pleas from Fearful Military Pet Owners Prompt Inquiries to Departments of Defense, State

As the first U.S. charter flights evacuating the families of military personnel begin to leave Japan, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is asking Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to clarify the U.S. government’s policy on whether or not military families can bring their pets with them—or must be forced to choose between staying in harm’s way and abandoning a beloved companion. ALDF has received desperate emails from the families of active military in Japan, terrified of what fate awaits their animals if, as they have recently been informed, pets will not be allowed on evacuation planes chartered by the U.S. Department of State.

The increasing threat of radioactivity in the wake of last week’s unprecedented earthquake and tsunami have led the military to begin voluntary evacuations today for the families of U.S. military stationed in Japan. It is at the discretion of the agencies overseeing these evacuations whether or not to allow pets—beloved family members to hundreds of U.S. military families in Japan—to evacuate with their owners.

“In a context of terrifying natural and nuclear disasters, with military personnel and their families already being separated from each other, we would hope that the U.S. government would not place an additional burden on military families by disregarding the very real bonds they have with their animal companions,” says Carter Dillard, ALDF’s director of litigation. “It is our hope that the tragedy of people forced to abandon beloved pets in order to evacuate to safety, which we saw play out on a heartbreaking scale during Hurricane Katrina, is not replicated during the current crisis in Japan.”

A copy of ALDF’s letter to the Department of State and the Department of Defense follows.

March 17, 2011

Hillary Clinton

Washington, DC 20520

Robert M. Gates
Secretary of Defense
U.S. Department of Defense
1400 Defense Pentagon
Washington, DC 20301

Dear Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Gates:

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has been contacted by family members of active duty U.S. military personnel stationed in Japan who are deeply concerned that they will not be allowed to bring their companion animals with them should they choose to leave the country as part of the voluntary evacuations authorized today. News stories corroborate their fears that pets will not be allowed on the State Department’s charter flights out of the country.

According to U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of State official policy guidance (Annex M of the November, 2005, Joint Plan for DOD Noncombatant Evacuation and Repatriation), it “is clear that ‘pets usually cannot be accommodated on an evacuation flight.’” ALDF is respectfully writing to inquire as to how the policy is now being applied to the evacuations underway in Japan.

According to the desperate emails ALDF has received from families stationed in Japan, many are hesitant to evacuate from the escalating radiation danger because they do not wish to leave behind their beloved pets.

ALDF has been told by the families of military personnel in Japan that veterinary clinic hours have been extended so that health certificates necessary for departure from the country can be obtained for these animals. However, should pets be denied passage with their families on evacuation flights, an uncertain—and likely, grim—fate awaits the hundreds of pets of U.S. active duty military personnel who are remaining in the country of Japan to assist with relief efforts.

The tragedy of Americans in the midst of disaster being forced to choose between leaving their beloved animals and remaining in harm’s way spurred significant legislation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina—2006’s Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act—designed to ensure that families can evacuate without leaving behind their four-legged members. Americans consider their pets members of their family; they should not have to choose between fleeing the current danger in Japan and abandoning their animals. Please clarify for us how the United States government intends to apply its policies regarding pet evacuation to avoid compounding the already-heartrending circumstances for these military families.

Sincerely,

Carter Dillard

Carol said,"Peta does not have shelters...what they do is bring attention to the world about the cruelties happening all over the world". Yes, Carol, I KNOW that. That's why I worded my comment like that...it was meant "tongue-in-cheek", since PeTA has never rescued a single animal, and the attention they raise, while it's supposed to be for the benefit of the animals they appear to be focusing on, is almost always a guise to get donations, which rarely go to benefiting those animals at all. There ARE documented cases of PeTA supposedly rescuing animals from kill-shelters or from places where they claimed they were going to re-home them (adopt them out) and instead, all the animals were immediately euthanized and dumped. PeTA's response (only after being caught) was that they "couldn't save 'em all". Well, they didn't save a single one!
